Volunteer Information Benefits of Volunteering Becoming a Volunteer Program Opportunities Thank you Volunteer Information Volunteers are the heart of the Timmins & District Humane Society. From daily care and enrichment to events and behind-the-scenes support, our volunteers play a vital role in giving animals the second chances they deserve. Whether you have a few hours a month or can help more regularly, your time and compassion truly make a difference. The Benefits of Volunteering Volunteering with animals can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience, offering various benefits both for the volunteers and the animals. Here are some key advantages: Animal Welfare Volunteering directly contributes to the well-being of animals. Your efforts can help provide care, attention, and socialization, improving their overall quality of life. Community Engagement Volunteering allows you to connect with your local community. You'll likely meet like-minded individuals who share a passion for animals and their welfare, fostering a sense of camaraderie Skill Development Working at an animal shelter can provide opportunities to develop and enhance various skills, such as animal care, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and customer service. Compassion & Empathy Volunteering can cultivate and strengthen your sense of compassion and empathy. You may gain a deeper understanding of the challenges animals face, leading to increased empathy not only for animals but for people in challenging situations as well. Personal Satisfaction Knowing that you've made a positive impact on the lives of animals can be immensely satisfying. Volunteering often brings a sense of fulfillment and purpose. Health Benefits Spending time with animals has been linked to various health benefits, including reduced stress, lower blood pressure, and increased levels of the feel-good hormone oxytocin. Learning Experience Volunteering at an animal shelter can be an educational experience. You may learn about different species, their behaviors, medical needs, and the importance of responsible pet ownership. Career Exploration For those considering a career in animal-related fields, volunteering provides valuable hands-on experience. It can help you decide if working with animals is the right path for you and can be a valuable addition to your resume. Positive Environment Animal shelters often have a positive and supportive atmosphere. Volunteering can provide an escape from daily stresses and offer a welcoming and uplifting environment. Advocacy Opportunities Through volunteering, you may become more aware of animal rights and welfare issues. This awareness can turn you into an advocate for positive change, raising awareness about responsible pet ownership and the treatment of animals. Remember, the benefits of volunteering can vary from person to person, but the overall impact is often positive and contributes to the well-being of both volunteers and the animals they care for. Becoming a Volunteer If you would like to become a volunteer, complete an application form, obtain a criminal record check (please contact us to obtain your criminal record check at a discounted price) and attend an orientation session. Download Volunteer Application Form *Please note: Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by and adult. Volunteer Program Opportunities Our Animal Shelter Volunteer Program offers a myriad of opportunities for individuals with a passion for making a positive impact on the lives of our furry friends. Maintenance Committee Volunteers assist with yard work, general maintenance around the shelter, automotive repairs, renovations, etc. Fundraising Committee TDHS relies on local fund raising, donations and volunteers to support its activities. We receive no funding from the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA), as we only have the status of an affiliate branch. Therefore, volunteers that are interested in discussing fundraising ideas, assist in the planning, coordinating and execution of events are greatly appreciated. Volunteers could also assist in communicating with sponsors and donors. Sewing Committee Volunteers are asked to cut down and resew large bulky comforters that do not fit in our washing machine into smaller bedding pieces for the comfort of our animals. Canine Enrichment This program allows volunteers to help maintain the health and welfare of TDHS dogs by providing physical activity, training, and companionship. While volunteers are walking our dogs, they can also provide mental stimulation through positive reinforcement by leash training or reinforcing basic commands. Volunteers can also let certain dogs run loose in our fenced-in yard to allow them to burn their energy. Other tasks may include brushing and bathing dogs, playing fetch and socializing puppies through humane interaction. Feline Enrichment This program includes several activities to help stimulate the cats. Volunteers will be asked to play with very active cats and kittens. Volunteers will also be asked to pet and brush some of the cats that are more nervous and shy in order to improve there socialization through humane interaction. Feline enrichment provided by our volunteers is necessary to improve the quality of life of the feline residents and make there stay here at TDHS more enjoyable. A well-socialized cat is more likely to be loving, trusting, affectionate and well-behaved and therefore can be successfully adopted. Hands-On Cleaning Depending on the time of day, volunteers will assist our employees with animal care that is provided daily. Some of the responsibilities include cleaning adoption rooms (scooping litter boxes, cleaning dog kennels, sweeping, moping), providing fresh food and water, helping with laundry, replenishing areas with bedding and supplies, etc. Fundraising Events TDHS is always planning different types of events which could not be possible without the help of our volunteers. There are several roles that volunteers can have during these events. Events vary from fundraisers, booths, adoption events, community events, etc. Promoting Pet Adoptions Volunteers assist staff by showing adoptable animals to the public during events. They also help promoting adoptable pets from the TDHS through social media. Dog & Cat Transfer Program When TDHS is faced with a lack of space for new arrivals in our facility, we reach out to other shelters in Ontario through our Second Chance Dog Transfer Program. With this program we occasionally need new volunteers to transport our animals from our shelter to another. Fostering Animals On occasion TDHS searches for extraordinary families who are capable of opening their homes and hearts to certain animals in our care that are in need of special care such as post-op patients, bottle feeding kittens, nursing mothers with their kittens, cats or dogs with minor wounds or treatable illnesses, etc. Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Timmins & District Humane Society. We look forward to meeting you!

Choose an animal Fill out an adoption application form . You will need to provide two references and the name of your veterinarian. If you are renting your housing, please include contact information for your landlord. Once your application is approved, an appointment for you to come and meet the animal(s) will be scheduled. We are committed to finding our animals their " fur-ever family ". If you have any questions regarding our adoption process, please feel free to contact us . Included in your adoption fees (dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets) Health Check Comprehensive pet health check by our veterinary team. A pre-adoption pet health check-up is a thorough examination ensuring the prospective owner receives a detailed understanding of the pet's current health status, vaccinations, and any necessary medical care, empowering them to provide the best possible care for their new furry friend. Spay/Neuter Spaying or neutering your pet promotes responsible guardianship and helps control the pet population. Spaying and neutering, essential components of responsible pet care, offer multifaceted benefits. These procedures not only prevent unplanned pregnancies, addressing the issue of pet overpopulation and reducing the burden on shelters, but they also contribute significantly to the individual health and well-being of the animals. Furthermore, these procedures often lead to more manageable and harmonious relationships between pets and their owners, as they minimize hormonal-driven behaviors and create a calmer temperament. Cats - FVRCP FVRCP vaccination safeguards cats against respiratory and systemic infections, promoting their overall well-being. FVRCP is a combination vaccine for cats that protects against three common and potentially serious infectious diseases: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR): Caused by feline herpesvirus, it is a contagious respiratory infection leading to symptoms like sneezing, nasal discharge, and eye inflammation. Calicivirus: Another respiratory infection, calicivirus causes symptoms such as fever, mouth ulcers, and respiratory issues. Panleukopenia (also known as feline distemper): A highly contagious and often fatal viral disease affecting a cat's gastrointestinal tract, immune system, and bone marrow. Administered as part of routine feline vaccinations, the FVRCP vaccine is crucial for preventing these diseases and ensuring the overall health and well-being of cats. Dogs - DA2PP & Bordetella DA2PP (excluding Leptospirosis) protects dogs from four key diseases, while Bordetella vaccination protects from respiratory infections, ensuring your canine companion's health. DA2PP, also known as the core combination vaccine for dogs, protects against several infectious diseases: D: Distemper: A viral disease affecting a dog's respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. A2: Adenovirus Type 2 (Hepatitis): Guards against canine infectious hepatitis caused by adenovirus type 2. P: Parvovirus: Protects against this highly contagious viral disease that affects a dog's gastrointestinal tract. P: Parainfluenza: Addresses a respiratory virus contributing to kennel cough. Bordetella is a vaccine targeting Bordetella bronchiseptica, a bacteria causing kennel cough or infectious tracheobronchitis. This vaccine helps prevent respiratory infections, particularly in environments where dogs are in close contact, such as kennels or dog parks. Both DA2PP and Bordetella vaccinations are integral components of routine preventive healthcare for dogs. Microchip (dogs & cats) Microchipping your pet provides a permanent ID, aiding in quick reunification if lost and enhancing responsible pet ownership. Microchipping is a straightforward and safe procedure wherein a small chip, containing a unique identification number, is implanted under a pet's skin. Positioned between the shoulder blades, this chip serves as a permanent form of identification. Though not a tracking device, the chip can be scanned if the pet is lost, facilitating a quick reunion by retrieving the owner's contact information from a registry. Regular updates to the registry ensure the information remains current, enhancing the chances of a lost pet being successfully reunited with its owner. Rabies Vaccine (dogs and cats) The rabies vaccine is crucial for pets, providing protection against a deadly virus and contributing to public safety. The rabies vaccine is a crucial preventive measure for animals, including dogs and cats. It provides immunity against the rabies virus, a deadly disease that can affect mammals, including humans. The vaccine is typically administered in a series, with periodic booster shots to maintain immunity. Rabies vaccination is often a legal requirement and is essential for public health, as rabies is a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected animal. Regular compliance with rabies vaccination protocols is essential for the well-being of pets and helps prevent the spread of this potentially fatal disease. Dewormer Dewormed pets are healthier and free from internal parasites, ensuring their well-being and preventing potential health issues. Deworming is a preventive measure in pet healthcare, involving the administration of medication to eliminate or prevent internal parasites, safeguarding the pet's overall health. Concurrently, a fecal test, through the analysis of stool samples, identifies specific parasites, enabling veterinarians to tailor treatment plans. This combined approach is integral to maintaining optimal well-being and preventing potential health issues associated with internal parasites in pets. Parasite Treatment (as needed) Regular pet parasite treatment safeguards against infestations, ensuring the health and comfort of your furry companion. Pet parasite treatment involves the administration of medications to eliminate or prevent parasites in animals. This includes deworming to address intestinal worms and preventive medications for external parasites like fleas and ticks. Regular parasite treatment is essential for maintaining the health of pets, preventing the spread of parasites, and ensuring a comfortable and safe living environment. Veterinarians may recommend specific treatments based on the pet's age, lifestyle, and potential exposure to parasites. Regular veterinary check-ups and adherence to prescribed treatments contribute to the overall well-being of pets. Health & Adoption Records Comprehensive pet health and adoption records provide vital insights for optimal care, promoting a happy and informed journey with your new companion. When adopting a pet from our shelter, you'll receive comprehensive health and adoption records. These documents detail the pet's medical history, vaccinations, and any necessary treatments, providing valuable insights into their overall well-being. This information empowers you to continue their care, ensuring a smooth and happy transition into their new home.
