Part-Time Animal Care Attendant Part-Time Organization: Timmins & District Humane Society Location: 620 Mahoney Rd N, Timmins, ON, Canada Reports to: Apply Now POSITION TITLE: Animal Care Attendant: Part-Time ORGANIZATION: Timmins & District Humane Society REPORTS TO: Executive Director, Lynn Michaud POSITION SUMMARY: An Animal Care Attendant (ACA) is responsible for the overall care of the animals cared for by the Timmins and District Humane Society (TDHS), as well as ensuring proper cleanliness of the shelter environment. Individuals must be available to work certain holidays, as well as overtime as needed. Individuals must also be available for emergency after hours, on-call duties on an approximately four (4) to six (6) week rotational basis. Regular Shifts: Saturdays and/or Sundays plus some statutory holidays. Paid Hours: 7.5hrs per shift On-Call Shifts: Weekends - Friday 5:00pm to Monday 9:00am; Weekdays 5:00pm to 10:00am or 11:00am. Start Date: Immediately Regular Rate of Pay: $22/hour Regular Rate of Pay: $20.00 per hour (64hr training-probationary period) $22.00 per hour (regular rate after successful completion of training/probationary period) ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Attending to the overall care of shelter animals. • Ensuring appropriate environmental enrichment of shelter animals. • Ensuring ongoing physical, emotional, and behavioural observations to contribute to and ensure appropriate ongoing animal care/health plans. • Cleaning, organizing and disinfecting the shelter, in order to provide a safe and appropriate environment for animals, staff, volunteers and clientele. • Administering prescribed medication to identified animals, as per the direction of the TDHS veterinary team. • Notifying the TDHS veterinarian and/or TDHS veterinary technician and/or the Executive Director of any observed health issues or concerns of shelter animals. • Communicating and working with the TDHS volunteers who may assist on weekends. • Completing emergency after hours duties which entails responding to animal control admissions; impoundment releases; foster-to-adopt home inquiries; animal care duties; and/or assisting with emergency euthanasias. • Promptly reporting all issues or concerns to the Executive Director or their designate. • Abiding by all TDHS policies and procedures. • Working in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Bill 168 (Violence and Harassment in the Workplace). • Other duties as deemed necessary by the Executive Director or their designate. QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: • Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. • Possess a genuine interest and compassion for animals. • Must possess own vehicle. • Must live within thirty (30) minute drive from TDHS in order to meet after hours emergency response requirement. • Must possess good communication skills, both written and verbal. • Must be dependable and reliable. • Must have excellent time-management and organizational skills in order to complete assigned tasks in timely manner and to a high standard. • Must possess the ability to problem-solve quickly, be adaptable to unexpected changes/demands, and work well under pressure. • Must possess good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. • Must have the ability to learn quickly. • Strong ability to take the initiative on tasks and/or ideas that benefit the animals and TDHS as a whole. • Must possess the ability to work in both a team and/or independent environment. • Must not have any physical limitations that would impede the ability to complete identified work responsibilities (i.e. ability to lift 30lbs or over; be on their feet most of the day; allergies to animals). • Must possess access to reliable transportation. • Must live within thirty (30) minute drive from TDHS in order to meet after hours emergency response requirement. • Must provide a clean and current Level 2 Criminal Record Check. • Working knowledge of Microsoft Applications, Facebook and WordPress would be considered assets. • Education and/or relevant experience in animal care and animal handling would be considered strong assets. The Adoption Process & Fees Please be aware that we receive a high number of adoption applications every day. We strive to process applications within five (5) business days; however, depending on the number of applications needing to be processed combined with the shelter being extremely busy with other services, the process may take longer. If you have not received a call with regards to your application within 5 business days, please call the shelter for a status update. What are the steps ? Choose an animal Fill out an adoption application form . You will need to provide two references and the name of your veterinarian. If you are renting your housing, please include contact information for your landlord. Once your application is approved, an appointment for you to come and meet the animal(s) will be scheduled. Adoption Confirmation Our goal is to find our animals loving, forever homes, therefore we want to ensure that it is the right fit for both parties. Once you've had your meet and greet and decided to go through with the adoption, you will sign the adoption contract and any further visits with our medical team will be discussed. Adoptions are not decided on a "first come, first serve" basis. Adoptions decisions are based solely on (1) what is in the best interested and (2) who best meets the needs of each individual animal. Included in your adoption fees (dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets) Health Check Comprehensive pet health check by our veterinary team. A pre-adoption pet health check-up is a thorough examination ensuring the prospective owner receives a detailed understanding of the pet's current health status, vaccinations, and any necessary medical care, empowering them to provide the best possible care for their new furry friend. Spay/Neuter Spaying or neutering your pet promotes responsible guardianship and helps control the pet population. Spaying and neutering, essential components of responsible pet care, offer multifaceted benefits. These procedures not only prevent unplanned pregnancies, addressing the issue of pet overpopulation and reducing the burden on shelters, but they also contribute significantly to the individual health and well-being of the animals. Furthermore, these procedures often lead to more manageable and harmonious relationships between pets and their owners, as they minimize hormonal-driven behaviors and create a calmer temperament. Cats - FVRCP FVRCP vaccination safeguards cats against respiratory and systemic infections, promoting their overall well-being. FVRCP is a combination vaccine for cats that protects against three common and potentially serious infectious diseases: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR): Caused by feline herpesvirus, it is a contagious respiratory infection leading to symptoms like sneezing, nasal discharge, and eye inflammation. Calicivirus: Another respiratory infection, calicivirus causes symptoms such as fever, mouth ulcers, and respiratory issues. Panleukopenia (also known as feline distemper): A highly contagious and often fatal viral disease affecting a cat's gastrointestinal tract, immune system, and bone marrow. Administered as part of routine feline vaccinations, the FVRCP vaccine is crucial for preventing these diseases and ensuring the overall health and well-being of cats. Dogs - DA2PP & Bordetella DA2PP (excluding Leptospirosis) protects dogs from four key diseases, while Bordetella vaccination protects from respiratory infections, ensuring your canine companion's health. DA2PP, also known as the core combination vaccine for dogs, protects against several infectious diseases: D: Distemper: A viral disease affecting a dog's respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. A2: Adenovirus Type 2 (Hepatitis): Guards against canine infectious hepatitis caused by adenovirus type 2. P: Parvovirus: Protects against this highly contagious viral disease that affects a dog's gastrointestinal tract. P: Parainfluenza: Addresses a respiratory virus contributing to kennel cough. Bordetella is a vaccine targeting Bordetella bronchiseptica, a bacteria causing kennel cough or infectious tracheobronchitis. This vaccine helps prevent respiratory infections, particularly in environments where dogs are in close contact, such as kennels or dog parks. Both DA2PP and Bordetella vaccinations are integral components of routine preventive healthcare for dogs. Microchip (dogs & cats) Microchipping your pet provides a permanent ID, aiding in quick reunification if lost and enhancing responsible pet ownership. Microchipping is a straightforward and safe procedure wherein a small chip, containing a unique identification number, is implanted under a pet's skin. Positioned between the shoulder blades, this chip serves as a permanent form of identification. Though not a tracking device, the chip can be scanned if the pet is lost, facilitating a quick reunion by retrieving the owner's contact information from a registry. Regular updates to the registry ensure the information remains current, enhancing the chances of a lost pet being successfully reunited with its owner. Rabies Vaccine (dogs and cats) The rabies vaccine is crucial for pets, providing protection against a deadly virus and contributing to public safety. The rabies vaccine is a crucial preventive measure for animals, including dogs and cats. It provides immunity against the rabies virus, a deadly disease that can affect mammals, including humans. The vaccine is typically administered in a series, with periodic booster shots to maintain immunity. Rabies vaccination is often a legal requirement and is essential for public health, as rabies is a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected animal. Regular compliance with rabies vaccination protocols is essential for the well-being of pets and helps prevent the spread of this potentially fatal disease. Dewormer Dewormed pets are healthier and free from internal parasites, ensuring their well-being and preventing potential health issues. Deworming is a preventive measure in pet healthcare, involving the administration of medication to eliminate or prevent internal parasites, safeguarding the pet's overall health. Concurrently, a fecal test, through the analysis of stool samples, identifies specific parasites, enabling veterinarians to tailor treatment plans. This combined approach is integral to maintaining optimal well-being and preventing potential health issues associated with internal parasites in pets. Parasite Treatment (as needed) Regular pet parasite treatment safeguards against infestations, ensuring the health and comfort of your furry companion. Pet parasite treatment involves the administration of medications to eliminate or prevent parasites in animals. This includes deworming to address intestinal worms and preventive medications for external parasites like fleas and ticks. Regular parasite treatment is essential for maintaining the health of pets, preventing the spread of parasites, and ensuring a comfortable and safe living environment. Veterinarians may recommend specific treatments based on the pet's age, lifestyle, and potential exposure to parasites. Regular veterinary check-ups and adherence to prescribed treatments contribute to the overall well-being of pets. When adopting a pet from our shelter, you'll receive comprehensive health and adoption records. Community Holiday Fundraiser Exceeds Expectations, Raises Over $420 for TDHS < Back McKayla Sauve On behalf of the staff, animals and volunteers of TDHS, Gretchen accepts more than $420 from McKayla Sauve, who raised the money over the holidays. McKayla said she started with a $150 goal through a bottle drive, which then went up to $250, but by then people learned of her mission and simply started donating. All of us here at TDHS offer a huge thank you to McKayla and all those who supported her efforts! $420
