Dog Handling Please follow the link below to view our dog handling video. Link: https://youtu.be/QB1nir2XcGc TDHS Dog Walking Protocols Dogs that can be walked by volunteers have a pink “Walk Me” sign on their kennel door. If uncertain, please ask an employee. Always ask staff if certain dogs can be walked together or if must be walked alone. Dogs can be walked up and down Mahoney Rd and Caron Rd. Be aware of your surroundings and have control of the dog as you may encounter other dogs on your walk. Some of TDHS dogs might not like other dogs. ALL dogs must wear a chain collar/choke chain while on a walk (located in the hallway before the dog area). When used properly, this prevents the dog from slipping his collar and escaping your grip. Please watch: How to properly put a chain collar/choke chain on a dog. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7IUaCROT9E Alternately, a gentle leader (aka Halti) with safety clip may be used in place of a chain collar/choke chain if staff recommends this method for a particular dog. Please watch How to fit a Halti. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQul_CrSqeU Please note: it is important to position your lead properly for the Halti to work adequately. Your lead should be under the dog’s head, coming up between you and the dog. Waste disposal bags for dogs are located on the side of the door, always carry them with you while walking a dog. Once used, they can be disposed in the industrial garbage outside. It is important to wear a high visibility vest, provided by TDHS, while walking our dogs in order to make yourself more visible to oncoming traffic. They are located in the exit room on the top shelf. Please store it back on the shelf when you are finished volunteering for the day. Staff will assist with setting you up with a dog for walking until you are comfortable with the process. Cat Handling Please follow the link below to view our cat handling video. Link: https://youtu.be/lx1jdbKhwWQ Cat Care Protocols for Adoption Rooms Write on the designated monitoring sheets if you notice any health concerns with a certain animal, if there’s an urgent concern, notify staff immediately. Blankets: Put all soiled blankets into the dirty laundry bin. Fluff and arrange the remaining clean blankets and add additional clean blankets/bed as needed. Cat trees: Use a brush to get rid of the fur on the cat tree. Surfaces and walls: Kuranda beds and other surfaces must be cleaned daily with Prevail disinfectant spray and a clean cloth. If dirty, walls can also be sprayed with Prevail and wiped with a cloth. Food and water: Add additional kibble to food bowls. If bowls are dirty, wash them properly before adding the food. Water bowls need to be replenished with fresh water every day. Water bowls also need to be washed properly. Please only use water from the right tap located in the kitchen or the dog area. The water from the normal faucet tap is not sampled, therefore is only recommended while doing dishes and is not to be consumed. Litter boxes: Litter boxes need to be scooped daily. Sweep and mop: Move items around as necessary to sweep and mop the floors properly. All mop water must be changed daily prior to mopping. Windows: Using either window cleaner or vinegar, spray windows and wipe with a small amount of paper towels. Enclosures: When the cat enclosures are open (during the summer months), please make sure to clean them as well (blankets, litter box, water). Washing dishes: Fill one sink with hot water and a squirt of dish soap to clean the dishes. Dishes can be left to air dry and then put away. All liter pans and litter scoops must be washed in the grooming room bathtub. Garbage: Garbage can in each cat area must be emptied every day once cleaning of that section is complete. Stock up: Stock up kibble, drinking water, blankets, treats, toys, paper towels, litter, litter pans, litter scoops, wet food, and utensils as needed each day. - Second Chance Animal Transfer | TDHS
Since 2006, we've saved over 4,000 adoptable animals from euthanasia by transferring them to partner shelters and rescue groups. Support our mission to give pets a second chance at finding a loving home through your donations. Second Chance Animal Transfer When the Timmins and District Humane Society took over the animal control contract for the City of Timmins in July of 2005, it was soon faced with the heart wrenching issue of having to euthanize perfectly adoptable animals due to lack of space. Not willing to accept this fate for the many loving and wonderful animals that came into our care we soon started thinking ‘outside the box’ for a solution. We first started transferring adoptable animals to the Sudbury Ontario SPCA Branch when they had room, but we were still left with not having enough space for all the animals that came into our care. So in February of 2006 the Society committed itself to no longer euthanizing adoptable animals simply because of a lack of space, and thus, we officially launched our Animal transfer program. Eventually called the ‘Second Chance’ Animal Transfer Program this transfer program began its inception with limited resources with respect to transfer locations, manpower, vehicle accessibility and related expenses. However, the Society remained committed, persevered and the program has grown by leaps and bounds. Today we outreach to humane societies that include the Cambridge Humane Society, Hamilton Burlington Humane Society, York Region Humane Society and Lincoln County Humane Society. We also outreach to rescue groups such as All Hearts Rescue, Lab Rescue Ontario, Speaking of Dogs and Tiny Paws Rescue. We are proud to say that due to the hard work, dedication and all consuming belief that we can avoid the needless euthanasia of adoptable dogs, the Timmins and District Humane Society can boast being a very busy pound that has not euthanized an adoptable dog since February of 2006. This means that to date the Society has transferred and saved over 4000 Animals from being euthanized. Despite our success we continue to need the support and monetary help of the community, since this program survives solely on donation funds. So please help us continue the amazing work we do for the Animals that come into our care and donate. Our staff, volunteers and Animals thank you!
- Hill's Science Diet Shelter Program | Our Partners | TDHS
1 < Back Hill's Science Diet Shelter Program Helping Pets Find A Second Chance for Love Pink and black noses peek out from between the bars of the enclosures to greet the group of visitors making their way slowly down the aisle. The family peers into each enclosure searching for the pet they will take home with them. They pause occasionally to accept a slobbery smooch or give a scratch behind the ears before moving on. After walking down the aisle and conversing together, they make their decision. Her name is Chelsea , a four-year-old chocolate lab. She’s beautiful, with a glossy brown coat, bright eyes and a playful personality. Once the door opens, Chelsea darts out straight into the outstretched arms of her new family. Stories like Chelsea ‘s are a familiar scene in our shelter since we joined Hill’s Pet Nutrition Canada ‘s “Second Chance for Love” program in February of 2008. The program provides shelters like us with premium, quality food requirements for all dogs and cats waiting for a new home. As not-for-profit organizations, many shelters must rely heavily on food donations from the public or pet stores. These acts of kindness are appreciated tremendously. However, it is not ideal to feed animals different types and qualities of food because a changing diet can have a negative impact on their digestive systems. By continuously feeding our pets Hill’s Science Diet® pet food, our staff ensure that our pets are receiving a consistent, premium quality food that contributes to their overall healthy appearance, including shiny coats and regular body functions, making them healthier and much more attractive and ‘adoptable’ for families looking for a new pet. We’re excited that our arrangement with Hill’s will enable us to offer the animals in our care a consistent and high quality diet. We’ve seen first hand the role proper nutrition plays in the transformation of our pets. They are healthier, happier and more playful, which makes them more appealing to potential owners and much more likely to have a second chance for love. Our shelter is exclusively feeding Hill’s® Science Diet® to all the dogs, cats, kittens and puppies being cared for here. To learn more about the shelter program, please visit www.hillspet.ca/shelter or contact us to find out how you can provide a loving home for one of our pets. Previous Next
