- Second Chance Animal Transfer | TDHS
Since 2006, we've saved over 4,000 adoptable animals from euthanasia by transferring them to partner shelters and rescue groups. Support our mission to give pets a second chance at finding a loving home through your donations. Second Chance Animal Transfer When the Timmins and District Humane Society took over the animal control contract for the City of Timmins in July of 2005, it was soon faced with the heart wrenching issue of having to euthanize perfectly adoptable animals due to lack of space. Not willing to accept this fate for the many loving and wonderful animals that came into our care we soon started thinking ‘outside the box’ for a solution. We first started transferring adoptable animals to the Sudbury Ontario SPCA Branch when they had room, but we were still left with not having enough space for all the animals that came into our care. So in February of 2006 the Society committed itself to no longer euthanizing adoptable animals simply because of a lack of space, and thus, we officially launched our Animal transfer program. Eventually called the ‘Second Chance’ Animal Transfer Program this transfer program began its inception with limited resources with respect to transfer locations, manpower, vehicle accessibility and related expenses. However, the Society remained committed, persevered and the program has grown by leaps and bounds. Today we outreach to humane societies that include the Cambridge Humane Society, Hamilton Burlington Humane Society, York Region Humane Society and Lincoln County Humane Society. We also outreach to rescue groups such as All Hearts Rescue, Lab Rescue Ontario, Speaking of Dogs and Tiny Paws Rescue. We are proud to say that due to the hard work, dedication and all consuming belief that we can avoid the needless euthanasia of adoptable dogs, the Timmins and District Humane Society can boast being a very busy pound that has not euthanized an adoptable dog since February of 2006. This means that to date the Society has transferred and saved over 4000 Animals from being euthanized. Despite our success we continue to need the support and monetary help of the community, since this program survives solely on donation funds. So please help us continue the amazing work we do for the Animals that come into our care and donate. Our staff, volunteers and Animals thank you!

- Foster | TDHS
Become a foster parent to a cat or dog in need through the Timmins & District Humane Society. Provide a temporary, loving home and help animals prepare for adoption. Foster Program Exciting news from the Timmins & District Humane Society We’ve officially launched our foster care program! Instead of waiting for their second chance behind shelter walls, our beloved animals now have the opportunity to experience the warmth, comfort, and love of a real home while they await adoption. That’s where you come in. We’re looking for kind, compassionate members of our community to open their hearts and homes to pets in need—even if it’s just for a little while. Fostering is incredibly rewarding and can be tailored to suit your lifestyle. Whether you’re home full-time or just have a little extra love to give, there’s a foster opportunity that’s right for you. Here's how you can help 1 Short-Term Fostering Perfect for people who can commit for a week or two. These pets may just need a break from the shelter, recovery time after surgery, or a soft place to land before their adoption. 2 Long-Term Fostering Some animals need a little more time to find their forever homes. This could be senior pets, special medical cases, or those who simply don’t thrive in the shelter environment. If you're in it for the long haul, these animals will love you for it. 3 Kitten & Puppy Fostering Help us raise the tiniest, most vulnerable lives! From bottle babies needing round-the-clock care, to litters of weaned kittens and pups learning the ropes, your home could be their first safe haven. 4 Emergency or Weekend Fostering Great for those with limited availability. Sometimes we just need a place for an animal to stay for a few nights or over a weekend. Every night in a home makes a difference. We’ll provide all the supplies you need—food, litter, medical care—you provide the love and care. There’s a short application process to help us get to know you better and match you with the right animal for your home and experience level. 5 Hospice Care For those with the biggest hearts, hospice care offers love and comfort to terminally ill or elderly animals in their final chapter. It’s the most bittersweet kind of fostering, but also the most powerful gift you can give. Ready to be a hero in disguise? Click the link below to get started and join the TDHS foster family. You'll be giving a shelter pet the gift of healing, hope, and a second chance—right from the comfort of your home. If you're in the Timmins area and have a little extra room in your home and heart, fostering with the Timmins & District Humane Society can truly meaningful way to help your community and its animals. 💙 Fill out an Application
- Tuco's Trust | TDHS
Support "Tuco's Trust" at the Timmins & District Humane Society, a vital fundraising effort to provide life-saving medical care for animals in need. Help us reach our $50,000 goal to ensure every animal gets a second chance. Donate today! Donate Now! Tuco's Trust Everyday an animal will find itself in need of life saving medical care! More often than not, those animals come to the Timmins and District Humane Society, because we are their last resort – their last chance! Tuco was one such case! A sweet, loving and happy fellow who came to us with significant malformed back legs that impact his hips and mobility. Specialists stated that ideally Tuco would undergo multiple surgeries to correct his mobility issues so he could live his life to the fullest. Unfortunately, the surgeries would cost up to $20,000 – a cost we simply could not afford as a small charity. Tuco is still with us and living on the alternative treatment plan, which is long term pain management and supportive health program, and physical assessments every six (6) months to ensure the treatment plan remains in effect. Tuco’s story is one of many, and the inspiration for the incredible fundraising journey the Timmins & District Humane Society (TDHS) is embarking on called Tuco’s Trust. Every day TDHS sees animals come through our door in need of a second chance! Some simply need a warm bed and their belly’s filled before being reunited with their family. Unfortunately, countless are in need of a new home – a forever family to call their own. Due to the increased demand for medical care, as we will never turn an animal away, our already strapped resources are being stretched to the breaking point. Animals that we would normally be able to help are now at risk of not getting their second chance, because we simply don’t have the funds to help them! In light of the ever-increasing medical cases, TDHS is launching the Tuco’s Trust with a goal of raising $50,000. A goal we hope will take away the always present question and worry about whether we have the funds to help an animal in need when they need us the most! A goal we hope will eliminate animals having to needlessly wait while we look for funds to help heal them! Animals like Tater, who came to us after being attacked by another dog, which resulted in serious puncture wounds and damage to his eye that his family could not afford to treat. Or Sahar, a young, abandoned cat who gave birth to kittens in the cold winter only to lose them because the traumatic birth resulted in her suffering from a severe prolapsed uterus. Both Tater and Sahara came to us needing emergency care! Emergency care we provided and that saved their lives. However, being able to provide this care to all animals coming to us for their second chance – animals like Tuco – requires us to have available funds. Emergency medical care costs can range from several hundred dollars, but more often than not, several thousand dollars. Support of Tuco’s Trust ensures the question whether our ability to save an animal’s life is met with a “Yes”, and not with the question “Do we have the money?”. Those interested in supporting Tuco’s Trust can do so by donating today! Donate Now! Help Us Reach Our Goal - Share Tuco's Trust with the World! Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Copy link

Dog Handling Please follow the link below to view our dog handling video. Link: https://youtu.be/QB1nir2XcGc TDHS Dog Walking Protocols Dogs that can be walked by volunteers have a pink “Walk Me” sign on their kennel door. If uncertain, please ask an employee. Always ask staff if certain dogs can be walked together or if must be walked alone. Dogs can be walked up and down Mahoney Rd and Caron Rd. Be aware of your surroundings and have control of the dog as you may encounter other dogs on your walk. Some of TDHS dogs might not like other dogs. ALL dogs must wear a chain collar/choke chain while on a walk (located in the hallway before the dog area). When used properly, this prevents the dog from slipping his collar and escaping your grip. Please watch: How to properly put a chain collar/choke chain on a dog. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7IUaCROT9E Alternately, a gentle leader (aka Halti) with safety clip may be used in place of a chain collar/choke chain if staff recommends this method for a particular dog. Please watch How to fit a Halti. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQul_CrSqeU Please note: it is important to position your lead properly for the Halti to work adequately. Your lead should be under the dog’s head, coming up between you and the dog. Waste disposal bags for dogs are located on the side of the door, always carry them with you while walking a dog. Once used, they can be disposed in the industrial garbage outside. It is important to wear a high visibility vest, provided by TDHS, while walking our dogs in order to make yourself more visible to oncoming traffic. They are located in the exit room on the top shelf. Please store it back on the shelf when you are finished volunteering for the day. Staff will assist with setting you up with a dog for walking until you are comfortable with the process. Cat Handling Please follow the link below to view our cat handling video. Link: https://youtu.be/lx1jdbKhwWQ Cat Care Protocols for Adoption Rooms Write on the designated monitoring sheets if you notice any health concerns with a certain animal, if there’s an urgent concern, notify staff immediately. Water bowls need to be replenished with fresh water every day. Water bowls also need to be washed properly. Please only use water from the right tap located in the kitchen or the dog area. The water from the normal faucet tap is not sampled, therefore is only recommended while doing dishes and is not to be consumed. Litter boxes: Litter boxes need to be scooped daily. Sweep and mop: Move items around as necessary to sweep and mop the floors properly. All mop water must be changed daily prior to mopping. Windows: Using either window cleaner or vinegar, spray windows and wipe with a small amount of paper towels.
